The Magic of Coincidence

“Coincidence means only a connection that’s not seen. Roots meet underground.”
Charlotte Armstrong.

One thing is certain about coincidence, the occurrence of one fascinates believers and septic’s alike. The reason it interests me is that it’s a porthole into one of the most interesting questions we can ask.

*Is there order or purpose to this universe?

*Are the events of our lives ultimately objective or subjective?

*Is this a random world and are we just a lucky accident of evolution?

To me, a coincidence is a synchronicity.... the purposeful occurrence of two seemingly unrelated events. One such personal, undeniable example of this occurred when I was sitting in a coffee shop and started talking to a stranger who shared snippets of his wisdom in such a humorous way that was fascinating.... this was to go on to become the most significant experience and relationship of my life for the next 40 years!

Synchronicity is an odd term but it’s a familiar experience for many. Meaningful coincidence may get your attention in many different ways. You may dream of a childhood friend and he calls the next day.... or you may find a book you thought was lost just when you most need It. You may start self-reflecting by a sign or a song you heard. You may stumble upon something on-line at exactly the right moment or a stranger may say a few words you needed to hear... like it happened with me.

Two events at times surprisingly intersect. They may have no apparent causal connection. The surprise captures your attention and you begin to search for meaning.

“What does this mean for me?”

Researchers say, “we live in a haunted world where invisible energies are constantly at work.” Yet few people understand how synchronicity works.

Why does it happen and does this suggest that we are a part of this cosmic drama shaped by unseen hands? Then the critics of course say it’s simply psychological narcissism, the result of a person’s desperate need to find meaning in odd connections.

Random wasn’t enough for Carl Jung, who coined the term ‘synchronicity’. His alternative explanation was that meaningful events could not be explained by cause and effect and he also thought there was another force outside of causality. So, synchronicity to him meant an ‘acausal connecting principle’.

So how will knowing this help your life? what’s the next step?

When a coincidence arises, don’t ignore it. Ask yourself, what is the message here? What is the significance of this? Ask the questions and the answers will emerge. It may come as an insight, an encounter, a chance meeting and it will immediately give you a clue to its message. “Ah so that’s what this was all about!”

So, remain sensitive, observe. Of course, life can be difficult, responsibilities and obligations can become overwhelming. How do you find your way in a complex world?
Take 5 mins every day and sit in silence. Then ask, “what do I want for my life today?” Then let go and let your stream of consciousness, your quieter inner voice, supply the answers.

It would be helpful if the universe would give us a clue or a giant compass could point us in the direction we should be taking. In fact, the compass is there! To find it you only need to look inside yourself to discover your soul’s deepest desire.

Cheers!
